States Visited - Amy
Thought it might be fun to compare the states we've been to before the big trip. I have been to 29 and will be adding 5 during the trip. I'm still sad to be losing Alaska as the state that only I have previously been to. Go to this website to make your own map. You'll need to make a whole new post, not a response to this one.

And now we get to see who actually checks the blog on a somewhat regular basis (I'm talking to you - Steve, David, and Dad!)

Shore Excursions: Skagway, Alaska
Here is the final installment of the Shore Excursion Extravaganza. We end our tour in Skagway, where, like the others, you have a variety of town tours, nature walks, rainforest (?!) trips, etc. Honestly, the tours in each place all seem pretty similar to me. In total, it appears that there are 46 options, though some may not be available on our particular cruise. To see the complete list, click here and fill in the info.
- Ghosts and Goodtime Girls Walking Tour - My words will not do justice, so I have copied and pasted the description. It's a good one... "Step back in time and learn Skagway's rich history on a walking tour with one of the sensational madams of the Red Onion Saloon. Lavishly costumed and highly entertaining, your guide greets you with a souvenir garter and guides you through Skagway's streets and alleys, where ladies of the evening once rubbed shoulders with notorious characters such as Soapy Smith and Skookum Jim. Stories of Klondike Kate, Pea Hull Annie and Diamond Tooth Lil depict the adventurous, lusty and sometimes tragic lives of the thousands of women who joined the
stampede north. Your journey takes you past historic gold rush buildings and the infamous red light districts and ends at the world-famous Red Onion Saloon. Join in a champagne toast and explore the hallways and bedrooms of this celebrated brothel to see original relics and images of the ladies who worked there. If you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of Lydia, the resident ghost!" ($42/person, minimum age 16 - Sorry Sophie, you can't come)
- Bordello Breakfast and Suspension Bridge - Are we sensing a theme here? You start with breakfast at the Red Onion Saloon (see above) and then head off to one of the Klondike's newest attractions - apparently a large suspension bridge. I guess that's a neat thing if that sort of thing interests you. It's an odd combination, if you ask me. You do get to enter Canada on this tour - woo hoo! ($94/person)
- Golden Glassblowing Experience - Sarah and I have already claimed this one, so you boys need to pick an activity where Sophie is allowed - that means NO trip to the bordello for you. We get to learn about glassblowing and make our own ornament. They even ship it home for us. Also, we get to have a lovely afternoon tea. Very cool. ($199/person)
- Delectable Jewel Gardens - I bet you didn't know that Skagway was the Garden City of Alaska. What, during the 2 days flowers bloom? I'm sorry, that was harsh. I meant the 4 days. You'll have the opportunity to tour the gardens and relax with tea on a lovely sun porch. How nice. ($49/person)
- All Aboard Steam Train - Because there won't be enough train travel on the trip, here is the opportunity for more! In a vintage railcar, travel past the White Pass summit to Fraser Meadows to take in the breathtaking scenery (I could totally write for travel co
mpanies). I do have a concern - how vintage are we talking about? Those really early steam engines had a tendency to explode. I'm not so sure I care for that vintage... A glass of champagne is included with this excursion because you will be joining the White Pass Summit Club. How fancy. If you boys decide to go with this, you'll need a notarized letter with permission from Sarah since you'll be leaving the US with only one parent for Sophie. ($229/person)
