After a little bit of digging, I have to do the rental - the name on the credit card has to match the name of the indicated driver.....
So, unless someone has a better idea, I'm going to call Enterprise to see if their cars have GPS systems (I don't see them listed or even available) and, if they don't, I'll buy one. Renting one from the companies that don't include them costs $10/day ($160 for the trip), buying a "transatlantic" version (US & Europe, with lifetime US updates) TomTom costs $172 from Amazon. So it seems like a more or less even break)

what kind of gps do you have now? did you check to see if you can buy a uk map pack for it for cheaper?
also, wait to reserve the car until steve has a chance to see if he can get a better deal - he says he should be able to look by mid-week.
I have an old garmin that's out of date (never had any maps updated) and for which I've long since lost the cable (not sure if it's a standard USB cable or not). Also gone (thanks to Dave) is the dash mounting device so it sits in the coin/drink tray.
I checked Triple A and AARP rates - and Enterprise is still a lot better.
if it's a standard cable (which you should be able to tell by looking at it, or send me the model number, and i can find out) or it takes a microsd/sd card, then it should be cheaper to just load the UK maps - it looks like they are about $70. i don't think it matters if your maps are out of date. i have to think some sort of removable dashboard mount wouldn't be that expensive either (or let the person in the passenger seat hold it & read the directions).
he can get deals through work - often, big companies have corporate deals for better rates that employees can use, even when not on official business. just give him a few more days.
